Reebok

At Reebok, we know that greatness doesn’t come from standing still. We have a long history of pushing boundaries. We’re the brand that helped usher in a fitness movement that forever changed the way we look at spandex and headbands. It’s not the 1980s anymore but today, we continue to be daring in everything we do. We are curious, provocative, witty and unexpected. We are Reebok.

Ready for a Fresh Start? What to Look for in Your Next Gym

For most of us, the place we work out is more than just a building with fitness equipment. It’s almost like a second home when you consider how many hours you’ve spent there, the gallons of sweat you’ve left and all of the accomplishments you’ve achieved under that roof. Through the good days and the bad, the gym is always there for you, and when circumstances necessitate a change, it can feel like breaking off a long-term relationship or saying goodbye to your favorite white shoes after they’ve finally bit the dust.

All breakups are rough, but you’ll make it through, and if you pick right, your new gym will be even better than your last. Whether you’ve just moved, switched up your training style, or just need a fresh start, these are the things to look for.

A Strong Community

Part of the reason that many people feel uninspired in the gym is because they don’t have any connection with the people there. If you’re not a part of the classes or have a workout partner, it’s just you and the weights. Some people love that, but if you prefer group fitness experiences, you need a tribe that will empower you and boost your performance, making the overall experience more fun. When you tour the new gym, look for a diverse mix of people, from seasoned athletes to beginners, it helps to know that you have someone in your corner during the last two-minute drill.

Location, Location, Location

Location is probably the primary dealmaker for your new gym. Nobody has time to drive clear across town every morning, and the more convenient your new gym is, the more you’ll be in there every morning, lunch break, or evening. The location of the gym can also dictate the vibe. If it’s in a sketchy part of town, you’re not going to want to go for late-night runs, but if it’s in the middle of suburbia, you probably can’t make a ruckus dropping weights and blasting rap music. Keep these things in mind before you sign up.

Equipment That Supports Your Goals

Equipment and other accommodations like lockers and showers are essential. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a certain machine only to find your new gym doesn’t have anything remotely similar. If you head straight to work from a workout, then showers are a must too, and they’re not as common as one might think, especially in small DIY gyms. Make sure you tour the facility first so you can rest assured you have the tools for success.

This also includes the staff on hand too, because no matter how long you’ve been lifting, we can all use expert advice. Whether it’s a nutrition pro helping you cut some pounds, or you just want recommendations for new weightlifting shoes, it's nice to have experts available.

What It All Comes Down To

At the end of the day, you want to choose a place that makes you feel comfortable with enough room to grow. Don’t sign long-term contracts if you aren’t sure and see if you can sign up for a trial week. Once you’ve found the one, you’ll know it, and the only thing left to do is crush your goals.

How to Deal with Sickness or Injury So It Doesn’t Derail Your Progress

Getting results in the gym is all about consistency over the course of weeks, months and years. It’s a never-ending chase, and when one goal is accomplished, another one quickly appears. This is part of the joy of working out in the first place, but things don’t always go according to plan.

While you ideally only miss the gym during your planned recovery days, things come up that can disrupt your progress either for the week or sideline you for months in severe cases. What can you do? Let’s take a look at some of the most common progress-killers people face, and what to do about them, so you don’t let yourself go or go off track.

Sickness

Every fall and winter, we all have to combat a range of illnesses ranging from the common cold to the flu. One day you’re feeling great, crushing it in the weight room and the next you wake up with a pounding headache and can hardly breathe. For the most part, it’s important to adopt the “lose the battle, win the war” mentality, and take a couple of days off until you feel close to 100% again. Sure, it’s not fun, but you could end up prolonging your sickness if you try to push through. Use this time to focus on your nutrition, stretch out and dedicate your energy to getting over your sickness first; the weights will be waiting for you when you’re better.

Minor and Major Injuries

Whether you felt it coming on and decided to push through or an injury happened out of nowhere, “toughing it out” will only make things worse. For specific guidance, you should consult with a sports trainer or physician, but in general, for minor injuries, it’s best to avoid working it for at least a few days with a focus on improving range of motion via stretching and active recovery. Or, you could try cross-training too and switch to a new sport that still breaks a sweat without touching your injury at all.

For major injuries, mental games come into play. For example, if you broke a bone in a bike accident, you’ll be on the mend, counting down the days until you can slip on your gym shorts and get back to the regular routine. That day will come, but until then, keep focusing on nutrition and working around your injury. You can also try taking your brain to the gym when your body can’t, reading books and learning more about health, nutrition or whatever interests you. It’s not ideal, but making progress in other areas is all you can do sometimes.

The Power of Patience

At the end of the day, getting over these disruptions is about having patience, listening to your bod, and finding positive outlets to help support your progress. Whether it’s signing up for a month of yoga classes or shopping for new workout clothes for men that you can rock once you’re back to 100%, use this time to focus on yourself and you’ll get through whatever you’re facing.

Thinking About Training for a Marathon? Here Are 4 Things to Know

Running a full marathon is a goal for many everyday athletes. Whether you’re a runner by trade or just want to see if your body is capable of running a full 26.2 miles, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a shot in 2020 and accomplish another fitness goal. As most know, you can’t just show up on race day and give it your best shot, so you’ll need to start training. Here are four things to know before you start.

You Need Ample Time to Train

You’ll often hear of people taking half of the year just to train for a marathon. That might seem a little overkill at first, but 26 miles is a long way, and to run it all in one shot, you need to condition your body. While 25 weeks or so isn’t a requirement, and you could get away with a shorter training period if you’re experienced, it’s always best to give yourself more time than you think you might need. You never know when an injury or stomach bug will sideline you, so having some buffer time will ensure nothing can throw you off your game.

Your Shoes Matter

If you’re serious about training for a marathon or just running in general, you need a dedicated pair of running shoes. Just like the tires on your car and their condition can impact how the ride is, your shoes have a similar influence. You want a pair that makes every step easy with minimal impact to keep you comfortable for the entire run. Once you think you’ve found your go-to pair, take them for a 10-mile test drive to make sure they can hold up without causing you any pain.

Don’t Abandon Strength Training

There’s more to training for a marathon than just running a lot. Sure, running is a big part of it, but you should also incorporate a few strength training sessions every week. By doing exercises like lunges, squats and planks, you can strengthen the muscles in your legs and core, where injuries can likely occur. When in the middle of a 25-week training regimen, preventing injuries becomes even more critical, so do what you can to protect yourself.

Dress the Part

Along with building up your endurance for race day, you need the right uniform to ensure you’re performing at your best. While you might think that any old cotton T-shirt and shorts will do the trick, if you’ve ever had to deal with chafing or running in a sopping wet shirt, you know it can be annoying, painful, distracting and hurt your results. Shop around for workout clothes for women or men specifically engineered for running and you’ll feel effortlessly comfortable and look even more stylish come race day.

The Finish Line

Training for a marathon is no easy task, but with the right mindset and planning, any everyday athlete can do it. Keep these things in mind, pick your start date and start training the right way.

Tips for Becoming the Best Motivator for Your Friends

As a dedicated gym-goer, you probably have friends who ask you all the time to help them put together a program to get them in shape. Especially during this first part of the year, your pals with resolutions are serious about making changes. That’s awesome news, but only if their dedication lasts. As you already know, results are about consistency, and getting in the gym regularly is about lacing up your cross-training black shoes even when you don’t feel like it. It’s your job to help them build the habit so they can discover their love for fitness.

Whether you’re a professional trainer or your friend wants you to help them get into the whole gym routine thing, here are some tips to help you be the best motivator you can be.

Help Them Set Clear Goals

Going to the gym just for the sake of being there is an okay first step, but without a clear goal, they’ll just be spinning their wheels. No matter how experienced they are, they need goals and a number attached to it as well. Whether they’re measuring weight loss, body fat percentage, strength or something else, having this goal gives them something to aim for.

Talk to them to understand why they're taking up an exercise regimen so you can show them how to achieve their goals. As time goes on, they might lose their excitement for the gym, but keep reminding them what they’re working for and it will put things back in perspective.

Find Ways to Make It Fun

For you, the gym is your playground. You have the most fun when you’re covered in sweat and out of breath. For newbies, there isn’t anything fun about holding a plank for a minute, so it’s your job to make it fun for them. If they’re competitive, make it a competition, even if it’s just pushing them to beat their last mile-time on the treadmill.

Or, you could venture outside of the gym and mix things up with a hike or a bike ride or go shopping for new workout outfits that will excite them to get back in the gym. Never underestimate the power that new sports bras or leggings can have on someone’s motivation.

Don’t Take Any Excuses, But Know When to Lighten Up

Although you’re their workout buddy first, sometimes all buddies have to dish out some tough love from time to time. It’s your job to hold them accountable and be that motivating coach who won’t let them back out of a workout because they stayed up too late the night before. For some of us, it can be tough and seem mean, but they’ll thank you for it later. However, you don’t want to go overboard and cause a big scene if they have a genuine excuse or reason to take a rest day.

Put yourself in their gym shoes—they’re new to the whole exercise thing, so what might seem like a light workout to you may be incredibly grueling for them. They don’t have that fire (yet) but they will eventually. So, go easy on them when necessary and be there to support them throughout their fitness journey.

Wrap Up

No matter how great we think are at motivating others, we could all use more practice. There’s a reason professional trainers take certification tests and attend classes to learn the latest training styles—because motivating and inspiring others is an evolving practice. There are always new methods, so take these tips and see how they can help you better motivate your friends to success.

The Small Details to Help You Crush PRs in 2020

“New year, new PRs,” as many might say, and if you already have your planned PRs for 2020 mapped out, you won’t let anything stop you. That being said, sometimes it’s not really our decision whether the personal record is achieved or not, and unforeseen forces (gravity being the biggest one) keep the weights on the ground. We’ve all been there, and it’s not a great feeling, which can leave “ifs” lingering in your head as you approach the PR the next time.

As most seasoned lifters know, there’s a mental component along with physical aspects of hitting PRs, and it’s about more than just picking up the weight or not. As you gear up for your 2020 PRs, here are some small details, tips and mental cues to help you shatter old records and set new ones.

Treat Warm-Up Sets Like the PR Itself

It’s easy to think of the sets on your journey to a PR goal as “gimmes.” You know you can lift it, so what’s the point in actually trying hard? If you hit each rep in your warmup with the same power and explosiveness as the actual PR target, you’re signaling to your brain that it’s go-time, and the PR will feel less sticky or grueling.

Warm Up with a Harder Alternative Lift

During big, compound movements like deadlifts, squats or anything that requires a sturdy pair of weightlifting shoes, the tiny details matter. If your elbows aren’t tucked just right, you can’t maximize your leverage, and these small details can get thrown off during the warmup sets. Rather than building up to your one-rep max by doing the same movement, you can try a hard alternative. For squats, you can do front squats on the way up. For deadlifts, do deficit deadlifts. By doing an alternative movement, you’re still warming up the same muscles, but saving the real form for the big lift.

Address Your Wardrobe

Believe it or not, the clothes you wear in the gym can have an impact on your performance. Think about it: There’s a reason you wear comfortable athletic leggings rather than skinny jeans at the gym. This isn’t to say there are magic “boost your PRs by 10 pounds” leggings or gym shorts out there, but even just having a dedicated gym outfit for PR day can give you a mental edge, just in the dedicated comfort it offers.

Give Your Body Time to Recover Before Trying Again

Let’s say that you use all of the mental tricks in the book and still can’t quite get the PR. Unless you’re injured, you should definitely give it another try—just be sure to allow your body a chance to rest. Take a knee, have a seat or just put your arms over your head and catch your breath before trying again. Frustration can set in after failing an attempt, and you might want to rush back into it, but you’re only at your best when you’re calm, focused and give yourself space to recover.

How Great Basketball Shoes Can Impact Your Game

The casual basketball player might not be too concerned with their footwear. Maybe you shoot hoops every once in a while to break a sweat and have a little fun, but other than that, you don’t worry about it. Even if you don’t take basketball super seriously, the kicks on your feet can have a huge impact on your comfort on the court, along with your overall skills, so it’s worth taking a second look at the shoes you’re lacing.

Still think that you can get away wearing your gym shoes or running shoes on the court? Here are a few reasons why wearing a pair of quality, dedicated basketball shoes is a must no matter how often you play or how experienced you are.

Traction

Basketball is a pretty quick and intense sport. Even if you’re just shooting hoops alone after a workout or playing a pick-up game with friends, if your shoes slip and slide on the court, you’re just asking for a serious injury. What’s more, you aren’t as competitive if you can’t keep up with the other players. Brands spend a great deal of time perfecting their tread and even small differences in the pattern can affect how fast you move on the court.

Ankle Support

Basketball shoes typically come in high, mid and low top styles, with high tops providing the most ankle support. If you don’t want “breaking ankles” to become more than just an expression, you’ll want to invest in quality shoes with extra ankle support. While all basketball shoes typically provide some level of support, high tops will have the most, compromising flexibility and speed. On the flip side, some prefer low tops because they feel faster, but they’re giving up some extra support. The choice is up to your preference, but any pair of basketball shoes is better than using the same gym beaters on the court.

Impact Absorption

Another important component that separates basketball shoes from other sneakers is their midsole, specifically the built-in impact absorption. While you typically want any shoe to have added support, in basketball, with all of the running, jumping and landing, you need a little extra. Playing basketball even just casually for a long period can be hard on your joints and those small impacts can add up over time and cause discomfort. That’s why you want to invest in a pair of shoes that will keep your knees and feet comfortable.

On-Court Style

Last, but certainly not least, a great pair of basketball shoes will add a bit of style to your on-court look. Even if you aren’t rocking matching gym shorts and a jersey with your name on it, you deserve to look good while hooping. There’s a reason why some of the hottest shoes in sneaker culture are basketball shoes—they offer timeless looks and stylistic appeal. Whether you go with a classic look or something more modern, you’ll look the part on the hardwood.

How You Know It’s Time for New Running Shoes

Most runners have a personal connection with their shoes. Our running shoes are with us through it all: the great runs and the not-so-great runs all the same. When it comes time to realize that our dirty, beaten down shoes might be at the end of their shoelace, it can almost feel like letting go of an old friend. Even so, old, broken running shoes lose their effectiveness and make workouts more difficult. Is it time to say goodbye? Here are the signs to look for.

You Experience Pain While Running

The first and biggest red flag that you need new running shoes is if you experience pain while running. Maybe you’ve just started experiencing pain or have always dealt with it, but running shouldn’t be a painful chore.

Running shoes’ number-one job is to make running comfortable and to protect your feet and joints from impact. If your shoes aren’t doing that, running is harder than it needs to be. Don’t settle for pain or expect to “break-in” your shoes even after months of running: There are better options out there.

They’ve Seen Far Too Many Miles

Just like you’ll have a bad experience driving a car with high miles, the same is true for running in high-mile shoes. Unfortunately, there aren’t invincible running shoes just yet, so every pair has an expiration date depending on how often you run, your gait and the terrain.

Everyone will be different, but if you can’t recall when you first got your shoes but know they’ve seen countless miles, it might be time to upgrade. Just like tires lose tread over time, your shoes will as well. Some terrains like trails or asphalt will eat up shoe tread more than treadmills and tracks, so where you run can impact your shoes’ lifespan. Even so, if your shoes are basically flat, it’s time to retire them to yard work, or even as plain walking shoes if they’re still in decent shape.

You Notice Uneven Wear

On the same topic of tread wear, not everyone’s shoes will wear out evenly. For example, if you run on the edge of your feet or have an uneven gait, your tread wear will tell you. Flip your shoes over and look at how the tread is worn down. If you see that it’s uneven, you’re putting unnecessary strain and impact on the most-used parts of your feet. If this is the case, you should not only upgrade your shoes, but explore options made specifically for your running style for additional support and, hopefully, a better running experience.

You Just Want to Try Something New

There’s no shame in breaking up with your old kicks because newer models look flashier or tout innovative technology. Companies like Reebok invest significantly in research and development and their goal is to create the best pair of running shoes with every generation.

There are always new advancements in footwear technology and these advancements are worth experiencing. If you see a pair in the store that seem promising, try them on, see how they feel and take them for a test drive. You might just find your new running companion for many runs to come.

Running Essentials to Put a Spring in Your Step

Although it’s probably cold and snowy in your part of the country, spring is right around the corner and will be here a lot sooner than you think. If the cold chases you indoors for your workouts, this is fantastic news. It won’t be long before you’re back out on the trail. That being said, are you geared up with the essentials to crush your PRs, push yourself further and conquer the trails, running paths and track meets this spring?

Here are some of the essentials to either upgrade your current running arsenal or new items to try that could make a huge difference this spring.

Dedicated Running Shoes

If 2020 is the year you break away from the treadmill and take outdoor running seriously, you’ll want the right footwear. Yes, that means having a dedicated pair of running shoes, rather than using your same gym shoes. While cross-training shoes are perfectly adept at running short distances or on indoor surfaces, once the rubber meets the road and you’re tallying off mile after mile, you’ll wish you had a bit more cushioning.

Companies like Reebok spend years of research and development to introduce innovative features that make even the longest, most grueling runs comfortable and achievable. From the original Sole Fury design from the ’90s to Reebok’s latest Floatride technology, there’s more to a quality running shoe than just sleek designs. Head to your local sports shop or read a guide to find the best pair for you. Lace them up, and you’ll see how much better your running shoes feel compared to your old stompers.

Supportive, Yet Functional, Performance Clothing

Look good, feel good, right? With the right performance gear, you’ll feel motivated and ready to crush your next run, and you’ll be more comfortable during the run too. There’s nothing worse than running around in a sopping wet cotton T-shirt. Don’t go swimming on your next run: Wear a tank or shirt made with sweat-wicking fabric. The best performance shirts feature reflectivity weaved in to keep you visible during early morning and late evening runs.

Along with staying cool, you need apparel that provides support during those long runs. That includes premium sports bras and athletic leggings with support where you need, but that remain breathable and flexible for added comfort.

Hats and Gloves for Those Chilly Mornings

Okay, so you’re not really up for a 20-degree run in the snow, but spring mornings can still be a little bit chilly. To prevent your hands from going numb 2 miles in, light, functional gloves can keep your mitts warm, and a lightweight performance hat or beanie can keep your noggin cozy. Don’t let those especially chilly 40-degree March mornings hold you back and crush it with the right gear.

The Benefits of Cross-Training

Even if you consider yourself to be in better-than-average shape because you hit the gym every morning or run frequently, there might be gaps in your training. When we specialize in only one type of activity, the gaps in our fitness—whether it’s in our strength, cardio or flexibility—can lead to issues in the long run.

To fix this, many people enjoy cross-training. What is cross-training, and how could it benefit your overall health, wellness and fitness? Here’s the low-down.

What Does it Mean to Cross-Train?

While most people have one specific sport they train in, cross-training is a way to achieve a higher level of overall fitness by venturing from your standard routine and performing different movements, lifts and activities. All of the activities you carry out should complement each other.

For example, a runner might lift weights to build muscle around their joints and help protect them from potential injury. The possibilities are endless, but everyone should consider cross-training for a few different reasons, such as the following.

Cross-Training Keeps Things Interesting

Besides the overall fitness benefits of cross-training, it can also keep things interesting. When you perform the same exercises for an extended period, it can become dull, and you might lose that spark that pushed you to go further.

So, instead of running the same sprints each day in your running shoes, you could instead lace up your weightlifting shoes and hit the deadlift platform and vice-versa. You’ll have a new challenge in front of you, which can inspire you to push harder. If you feel like every session in the gym is becoming too similar, cross-training could be your solution.

Cross-Training Provides More Schedule Flexibility

Let’s say you’re an avid lap swimmer and you go to the pool one day just to see that it’s closed. What do you do? If you cross-train, you can simply slip on your athletic leggings and go for a jog around the neighborhood. If you’re not cross-training, you might go back home and take an unplanned rest day. Which sounds better to you?

Cross-training helps you add a little bit of planned flexibility to your workout schedule. Are the tennis courts full? Shoot some hoops instead. Weight room a mess? Grab an open treadmill and sprint it out.

Cross-Training Fills in Gaps

When all you do is lift weights, you might suffer from lost flexibility or weak cardio. When all you do is run, you might benefit from building more muscles to protect your ankles or knees from potential injury. Cross-training is about meshing together different sports and movements that complement one another for a complete, full-body wellness program. You don’t need to do something entirely different every day. For example, even just lifting weights a couple of times per week if you’re a runner, or running a couple of times per week if you’re a lifter, can make a huge difference. Make sure that you’re training your entire body, and you’ll be more fit because of it.

About Reebok

From the start, Reebok has produced footwear and apparel for those who perform, move, inspire and innovate. Whatever your sport, Reebok has the athletic gear you need to propel yourself forward. New Year’s Resolutions for Active People

What New Year’s resolutions are you making this year? While the most common resolutions are typically related to fitness and health, if you practically live for your morning workout, generic ones like “start a fitness routine” don’t necessarily apply since you’ve passed the beginning stage in your fitness journey.

So, what should already active people strive to do this year? Let’s take a look at some next-level fitness and wellness goals that will challenge you to push forward and shape a better you.

Mix Things Up

Is your workout routine starting to feel a little, well, routine? Once you’ve hit your old goals and the gym routine is more about maintaining, it’s easy to feel uninspired while you’re treading away on the stair stepper. The gym should feel like your creative, happy place where you can burn off some steam and excite your mind, body and soul.

Not feeling it lately? Luckily, there’s an easy fix: Make it a resolution to try new types of workouts, sports and routines this year to keep you on your toes. Whether that means lacing up your basketball shoes and shooting some hoops or signing up for that Jiu-Jitsu class you’ve been considering for a while, make it happen!

Take Your Brain to the Gym

Not only should you work out your muscles while you’re in the gym, but you should also take your mind to the gym too. For many, that means reading regularly, but when we lead busy lives with barely enough time to get into the actual gym on some days, finding the time to pick up a book or do a brain-teasing puzzle might be a challenge.

The solution? Treat exercising your brain like a nonnegotiable item on your daily to-do list—just like your actual workout. Nothing can come between you and your goals when you treat them as true priorities for the day. Pretty soon, the habit will stick, and your mind will be stronger and sharper because of it.

Invest in Your Fitness

You certainly invest a ton of time into your fitness routine, but sometimes the only way to level up is to spend a bit more as well. However, that doesn’t mean wasting your money on useless fads and gadgets that may excite you for a moment before being stored in the back of the closet. Instead, invest in things that will provide real value that you will actually use.

For example, that might mean upgrading your membership to include access to other parts of the gym or a new, better gym altogether. Or, it could mean getting rid of your old, ratty T-shirts and shorts in favor of premium workout clothes for men or women that will keep you more comfortable during your training sessions. Whatever the case, if your fitness is important to you, invest in it, and your return will be better because of it.

What goals and resolutions do you hope to keep this year? Whatever they are, make sure to set them high, write them down and put in the work to make them happen this year!

3 Reasons Your Gym Clothes Matter

What do you wear to the gym? When it comes to workout clothes, there are a few different camps. Some people are always shopping for the flashiest workout outfit while others prefer to wear just any old T-shirt that’s too stained for anything else but sweating it out with some battle ropes. Whichever camp you belong to, or if you fall somewhere in-between, you might not fully realize your gym clothes are essential tools for your workouts—but they are in many ways.

Although you don’t necessarily need certain fabrics and cuts to pull some weight off of the floor or to run 3 miles, your workout clothes do a lot more than you might think. Here are a few reasons why your gym clothes matter.

Look Good, Feel Good

You know that feeling when your outfit is on point, and you can take any challenge on? When nothing can get you down, and you’re dancing around in your head just feeling yourself? That’s some powerful mental magic right there, and if you can transfer that energy over to the gym, those PRs won’t even know who smashed them.

Can a flattering pair of athletic leggings be enough to get one more rep? For lots of people, they are, and could do the same for you. Shop with a leading fitness apparel brand and see what difference well-fitting, stylish workout clothes can do for you.

Keep Your Cool

Besides making you look cool, premium workout clothes for women or men can keep you feeling cool too. When you’re busting it at the gym, you’re gonna sweat, and there’s nothing worse than wearing a sopping wet cotton T-shirt the whole way home or during your reps. Once you try a moisture-wicking, technology-packed shirt, you’ll wonder how you suffered with that wet T-shirt for so long.

Brands invest millions into creating innovative fabrics that are light, breathable and sweat-wicking, and their investments have paid off. The next time you’re shopping for new workout clothes, look at the technology that goes into the fabric. For example, Reebok’s ACTIVECHILL fabric is specially designed to keep you cool throughout your most intense workouts.

Free Movement with Support Where You Need It

Your workout clothes shouldn’t feel like a constricting glove and should move with you through every squat, snatch, sprint and more. With that in mind, they also need to support you too, and pieces like premium sports bras and performance running shoes can do just that. Without movement and support where you need it, you risk injuring yourself on big lifts and might not be able to put the mileage in that you could’ve otherwise.

Instead of limiting yourself with street clothes, try some fitness-approved apparel. Designers and brands spend a ton of time and money to perfect their formulas, and it shows in the results. To help optimize your workouts, shop with a brand that has decades of experience supporting athletes and elevating their performance.

3 Factors That Make or Break Cross-Training Shoes

When you’re in the gym, you don’t hold still, so when you find that your cramped, bulky, or flat-footed shoes are dictating what lifts and movements you can do in a workout, it’s frustrating. It’s also all the more reason you need quality cross-training or CrossFit shoes.

Cross-training shoes are meant to be the jack of all trades of workout shoes. They combine the best of what running shoes and weightlifting shoes have to offer in a complete, comfortable package to keep you on your game no matter what the WOD calls for. In essence, they should be the perfect gym shoes for any and everything. As you can tell, like any fitness footwear choice, there’s a bit of a science and art that goes into designing the perfect pair.

So, how do you know you’ve found the right pair for you? As you shop around, consider the following three factors that can make or break the perfect cross-training shoes.

Flexibility

Just like your favorite running shoes, your cross-training sneaks need to be able to move and bend with your movements—but not too much. Because you might plan to do lunges, box jumps and squats in your cross-training shoes, they shouldn’t feel too bendy—like they can’t support you with 135 pounds on your back. In the same vein, if you like to warm up on the treadmill before you lift or feel froggy on HIIT day, they can’t hold you back. Look for shoes made with a flexible upper and grooved sole for added flexibility when you need it without too much movement during your lifts.

Support Where You Need It

One of the primary reasons to have a designated pair of weightlifting shoes or running shoes is the featured support. For lifting shoes, that support comes in the heel. For running shoes, it’s in the midsole to help absorb impact and protect your arches. The perfect pair of cross-training shoes will balance these two areas for an overall comfortable workout experience.

It’s best to try on or test out cross-training shoes beforehand so you can get a feel for them, but when that’s not possible, you can turn to friendly people on the internet or in your CrossFit gym to find the best tried and true cross-training shoes. For example, it’s hard to go wrong with a CrossFit shoe designed with input from the CrossFit community like the Reebok CrossFit Nano. These shoes are heralded for their durability, versatility and uncompromising support.

Styled for Your Workouts

We all want shoes that perform and look great too, right? When your shoes feel good and look even better, you’ll feel on top of your game, ready to strut, lunge, or jump your stuff all through the weight room. Style is subjective, so there isn’t a clear-cut way to determine what you should look for. You might be a big fan of covert black shoes while someone else wants bright neon gym shoes.

All in all, choose shoes from a brand known for not only innovating in the cross-training and CrossFit space but also for their forward-thinking, heritage-inspired designs and colorways. Rock a brand with a legacy, and you’ll carry (or lift) on the tradition like cross-trainers before you.
